‘The Awakening – Story of a South African American’
Carmel Foster, a native of South Africa, who has lived a life few would envy but many will see themselves in. Born “Cape Colored”, as they say in South Africa. She is of mixed race, which made her a target of much ire or ill-will home and abroad. Her struggles go beyond her race. Born to a man who lived much of his life in the closet, Carmel familiarity with secrets and shame became all too apparent as her life progressed. From sexual abuse to homelessness a bad marriage to a move to the United States, her life has been paved by trauma and struggles.

Chapter 01
THE AMERICAN WAY
It is 2018, and the United States of America has enforced an unstated policy of snatching children from their parents. It is hard to believe, but the entire world has witnessed the brutal scenes of forcibly separating children from their parents, which the country’s authorities have pronounced to be illegal. On the news, you might have watched the horrible footage of little children crying and screaming as they are led away by security officials. The process of separating children from their parents and then detaining them in warehouse-like camps or detention centers is not something that the United States of America would ever do. Or is it?[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 02
CAPE COLORED
Try as I might, I cannot term my childhood easy by any stretch of the imagination. When I go over the times that I experienced as a child, I find little to very few beautiful things to reminisce about. This is unlike so many people around me who idealize their childhoods. I don’t blame them for viewing their childhoods through rose-tinted glasses – after all, this is a simpler time of their life when they had to live without worry or fear; when there were others around to take care of them; and when they were responsible for nothing, not even their own actions.[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 03
WHAT IS LOVE?
I lived in Zimbabwe in 1987, and that’s where I met my daughter’s father. He is an Indian born in Sri Lanka and have family all over the world, including London and India. When I had met him, we moved from Zimbabwe to South Africa, where I was born. No matter how much he wanted, he couldn’t love me the way he wanted to, mainly because of the arranged marriage.[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 04
I CAN, AND I WILL
I married my best friend, my soul mate. Growing up, I was no different from anyone else; I had the image of a perfect married life in my mind, and when I met my husband, I knew it would come true.[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 05
AMERICAN DREAM
Strange Things I got back from my trip to Philadelphia. There, I saw many eye-opening scenes. It was going to be a stiff completion but, as it turned out, also an unfair one. There were so many field workers who worked around the clock. They had no contract so, of course, they were not paid for overtime. There were many promises that were made, but we weren’t paid for it, like gas and mileage.[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 06
SAN FRANCISCO
When I look back, I am able to see why I was treated the way I was in the U.S. It was because I was an immigrant and later a domestic worker. In truth, my struggles began as soon as I arrived in the country to start a new life with my then fiancé.[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 07
In Pursuit of Happiness
When I pledged my allegiance to the American flag, there was just one specific question that I remembered in the exams. That question asked me to name one of the constitutions. Of course, I had spent too much time studying it, and so I remembered the specific one immediately: ‘The pursuit of happiness.’ However, now that I look at things, Trump’s administration has made everything so crazy that I am beginning to have doubts about my decisions.[/vc_column_text]

Chapter 08
She is the Change
My Right as a Human Being Will Not Be Interfered Life in America has really been a challenge, especially in the dating arena. I fail to understand how the dating industry has turned into a business. Coming from a different country myself, dating a person who spends a lot of time with you, you would actually believe that people develop feelings. I grew really attached to this person, and I believed that he also developed feelings for me.[/vc_column_text]

People of courage and no fear like her deserve a lot more respect than this. They are stronger than how we think they actually are. Amazing work!
